On autonomy in occupational trajectories

Published on
29 October 2017

The exhortation to be autonomous is ubiquitous in public policies. It is so widespread that the paradox inherent in it is almost completely forgotten.

Autonomy cannot be ordained, any more than freedom can; rather  it is constructed, as this issue given over to autonomy in occupational trajectories reminds us.

It draws on various levels of analysis. How is the exhortation to be autonomous reflected in practices and what are the effects on individuals and their trajectories?

Older workers and active ageing. A comparison between France and the United-Kingdom

Claire Lefrançois

Promoted since the end of the 1990s, active ageing encourages people to stay active as long as possible. We examine how this policy circulates in the United Kingdom and France. Based on the analysis of fifty interviews conducted with unemployed older workers, we show how it spread depending on countries and social relations.

Disabled workers’ life courses : impeded autonomies and institutional discrepancies

Louis Bertrand

As other social policies, French disability policies stress on the decisional autonomy of disabled peoples, as expressed in their written “ life project ”. This article deals with the work transition schemes for “disabled workers”. How does this status affects their life course ? How does the professionals influence the projects of the clients ? We show that on one side for the institutions the autonomy of the disabled workers is difficult to take in account and on the other side that a lot of clients don’t have a clear professional project and rely on the requirements of the transition services.

Goals and reality of autonomy among adults training’s public

Benjamin Saccomanno

Goal of many employment support procedures, autonomy needs to be questioned empirically. Based on a research inside the National Association for Adult Vocational Training (AFPA), the article describes three forms of autonomy that reveal paths to differentiated dynamics. If it appears as a resource to be maintained or a stake in conquest to progress, it can also crystallize tensions when social relations stigmatize its lack and lead the individual to identify himself through his distance from social norms. With the help of typical cases, autonomy reveals forms of convergence but also disagreements with the actors of the formation.

Patient autonomy, a goal or a necessary condition: practices of social and vocational services in physical medicine and rehabilitation centers

Seak-Hy Lo

This article aims to present how social and vocational services of two hospitals perceive the notion of autonomy in their work with persons who became disabled. In some cases, autonomy can be seen as a goal and in others, as a necessary condition for the management of the patient. According to the position adopted, the support of the patient is personalized (i.e.following predefined procedures adapted to the patients) or individualized (which supposes innovative practices on the part of professionals).

Vocational education and training – a pathway to success for all young people? The impact of ethnic origin in Germany

Mona Granato, Joachim Gerd Ulrich

The difficult situation of young people from ethnic minorities, during the transition from general education to apprenticeship, is well documented in Germany. There are some signs for barriers concerning especially the access of youngsters of ethnic minorities to dual vocational education and training (VET). Research on the results of dual VET can rarely be find, especially regarding the output and outcomes of youngsters from ethnic minorities in Germany. This contribution therefore aims to investigate the success of young people at the end of dual VET and during the transition to labor market taking into consideration the ethnic origin as well as the impact of individual, social and institutional factors.

Career paths and geographical trajectories: the analysis of three PhD generations

Bastien Bernela

Access of young PhDs to scientific position is a recurrent concern in recent empirical works. The issue of spatial mobility of researchers is also often discussed, but rarely both simultaneously. We propose a joint analysis of the determinants of occupational and geographical PhDs paths by using three Céreq Generation surveys (2001, 2004, 2007). Descriptive statistics and estimation of a bivariateprobithighlight the strengthening of PhDs geographical mobility, and the growing importance of publications for access to academic employment.
