Leaving a "section de technicien supérieur" without a diploma: the other failure in higher education

Fanette Merlin

This paper examines French higher education non-completers’ early career. Recent research and public policy show an increasing interest in university completion rates, as both a lever and a result of the higher education system efficiency. Non-completers from advanced technician programs (STS for “section de technicien supérieur”, a two-year post-secondary professional course) are less well-known, although they are as likely to leave higher education without a degree. Using Céreq’s 2010 and 1998 “Génération” surveys, we show that they no longer have an advantage in the labour market, compared to university non-completers.

Vocational education and training in Switzerland: limits revealed by apprenticeship contract termintations

Isabelle Bosset, Barbara Duc, Nadia Lamamra

In Switzerland, dual-vet apprenticeship represents the most used form of initial vocational training. It is recognized for its success in terms of learning of a profession as well as professional integration. However, almost a quarter of youths interrupt their training prematurely. Analyzing this phenomenon through the comparison of two vocational training tracks based on apprenticeship sheds light upon the Swiss vocational training system as well as the transition from school to work that is related to it.

NEET Youth: resistance and evolution over twenty years

Magali Danner, Christine Guégnard, Olivier Joseph

In France, nearly two million young people are neither in education, employment nor training. This article presents the dominant profiles concerning these NEETs, the resistances or identifiable evolutions over a period of twenty years, through four surveys conducted by the Céreq. While the situations of women and men seem to be getting closer in the labour market, young women do not win in terms of their trajectories in contexts marked by both structural and economic transformations. Through the prism of a gender analysis, the article discusses the importance of overcoming the statistical utility of the NEET concept, because of its static dimension.

Vocational training for a recent profession, osteopathe

Vivien Braccini, Franck Garnier, Laurence Durat

Vocational training is generally one of the stages in a professional training process for a given profession. This is why we propose to study the challenges and conditions for developing a skills benchmark for trainers for a recent profession. Using results from the exploratory phase of research carried out in a large French network of osteopathy schools, our team explores the network’s understanding of the vocational training needs of their trainers.
