The book presents the detailed results of the large-scale national survey carried out in the spring of 2013 among young people who left education in 2010.

What became of the 708,000 young people who left the education system in 2010? This is the question that Céreq was asking in the fifth wave of its large-scale national survey of the early stages of young people's working lives in France. The book presents the detailed results of the survey, which was carried out in the spring of 2013 among young people who left education in 2010. In the course of this period, which was badly affected by economic crisis, there was a sharp increase in the unemployment rate among the working population as a whole. The most highly qualified young people still have a significant advantage in terms of job quality and pay levels. On the other hand, the crisis is increasingly penalising the least well qualified young people.

After all, the economic crisis, which began in 2008, still seems to be worsening. Young people's career trajectories, which have been particularly severely affected by the difficulties in the labour market, vary even more markedly depending on their initial education or training. But to what extent have their trajectories been disrupted? In the spring of 2013, after three years in the labour market, 57 % of the cohort had been able to find employment quickly, even immediately, but above all sustainably. 59 % of the jobs held by the 2010 cohort were permanent (open-ended contracts or permanent jobs in the public services). On the other hand, 34 % of the jobs held by this cohort of leavers were temporary, while 16 % of the waged jobs were part-time, most of them held by people wanting to work full-time. However, this general statistical picture conceals wide disparities, which are extensively illustrated in the book.

  • 57 % of the young people have gained access to long-term employment
  • 59 % of the jobs are permanent (open-ended contracts or permanent jobs in the public services)
  • 34 % of the jobs held are temporary
  • 16 % of the waged jobs are part-time
  • 71% of the young people from managerial/professional backgrounds are in long-term employment
  • 40% of the young people have higher education qualifications
  • 17% left the education system without any qualifications
  • 13% of the young people spent some time abroad during their course
  • 61% of the young people completed at least one work placement during their course.
  • 68 % of the young people worked while studying
  • 91% of the young people worked during the three years following their exit from the education system
  • 16 % of the young people were in subsidised jobs between 2010 and 2013.

These figures relate solely to the 2010 cohort
