Young people’s trajectories in secondary education and following their entry into the labour market have been particularly closely observed for more than 20 years. While the share of young people leaving education with lower secondary qualifications only is declining, the share of those with upper secondary qualifications remains stable overall. However, changes are apparent at a more granular level: the widespread uptake of the three-year vocational baccalauréat has led to an increase in the share of those holding a vocational baccalauréat to the detriment of that of holders of the BEP and the technological and general bacs. With regard to the education-to-work transition, those in the 2013 cohort of school leavers with upper secondary qualifications suffered less unemployment than the previous cohort. How will the 2017 cohort (survey in progress) fare in the face of the health crisis? Among the challenges facing secondary education, the questions of apprenticeship-based programmes and the updating of the vocational pathway are the most pressing.
