The unseen work of sixth-formers: students juggling their studies with paid work

The nature of work undertaken by sixth-formers is highly varied, encompassing areas such as catering, delivery, online retail, family-based work, and both declared and informal odd jobs. This diversity reflects the complex and multifaceted social and economic landscape of work in today’s society. While the causes may vary according to individual profiles and family contexts, the effects on educational and life trajectories can be linked to the conditions under which it is carried out, or even to how it is perceived by the school system. However, this phenomenon remains under-researched and is often downplayed by the educational community, which only takes notice when fatigue, absenteeism or a drop in results make it visible. This Céreq Bref presents the initial findings of an exploratory and qualitative survey, shedding light on a previously unobserved aspect of upper secondary school life.
