As part of his work on the future careers of holders of PhDs, Julien Calmand was hosted for a week at the National Institute of Science Technology Policy in Tokyo, Japan. This visit was an opportunity for the Céreq researcher to present the results of his research to his Japanese colleagues. Collectively, they reflected on how statistically to compare PhDs' career trajectories in France and Japan.

A report on this subject was published in June:

Abstract:

Nowadays, PhDs transition from thesis to labour market is a great issue in major developed countries. Historically, the main labour output of these high qualified workers used to be academic sector and more generally Higher Education. Competition between countries and development of knowledge society all around the world have changed the role of PhDs and have brought new challenges to doctoral education.

Today, it is known that PhDs could integrate Higher Education but also worked in the private sector. This is also enhanced by the fact that there is now an international competition in access to permanent positions in the academic sector leading to chaotic professional transition from doctorate to labour market. Comparing 2 national experiences in France and in Japan and using 2 original statistic datasets, researchers from NISTEP and Céreq demonstrated those evidences with an international perspective. If Japanese PhDs have less difficulties to find a job than those from France, both population are concerned with fixed terms contracts in their early career and low penetration in private organisations.
